“At 19, more cool and mature!”
[ Star News' 19th Anniversary Special Interview]
One of the three major music agencies in Korea, YG Entertainment's leading boy group, TREASURE (Choi Hyunsuk, Jihoon, Yoshi, Junkyu, Yoon Jaehyuk, Asahi, Doyoung, Haruto, Park Jeongwoo), is experiencing significant growth. They achieved remarkable success this year, building a strong fan base in the Asian market and successfully completing a 40-city tour in 17 Asian cities. Among K-pop artists who embarked on their first tour in Japan after their debut, TREASURE stands out by attracting nearly 300,000 fans, making it one of the K-pop acts with the largest audience, while also further expanding their fan base. Additionally, TREASURE has partnered with the major U.S. record label Columbia Records and plans to target the North American music market with their second regular album, 'REBOOT.'
As Star News celebrates our 19th anniversary, we had a conversation with TREASURE's younger members, Haruto and Park Jeongwoo, born in our publication found year of 2004, about TREASURE's activities this year and discussed their future plans.
Thank you for participating in this interview for Star News' 19th-anniversary feature. Both of you, born in 2004, are the maknaes of TREASURE, and you're now 19 years old this year. How do you feel about your contributions to TREASURE's activities this year, and what are your expectations for the future?
Haruto: This year feels particularly meaningful for TREASURE. We've had an exciting and exhilarating first half of the year, from our debut Asian tour to releasing a new regular album. I'm looking forward to showing even more diverse sides of ourselves in the future.
Park Jeong Woo: First of all, congratulations on Star News' 19th anniversary! As a member of TREASURE, I feel that recently I have grown a lot both musically and personally. I hope we can continue to show even more fantastic performances in the future.
This year, TREASURE's activities have been particularly significant. Can you share what you have gained as K-pop artists and as members of TREASURE through your domestic and international activities this year?
Haruto: Recently, through our second regular album 'REBOOT,' we've shown a more mature side of TREASURE and explored various musical genres. It was rewarding to see that many fans appreciated the distinct change from our previous album. The process of trying new things allowed us to grow in various ways.
Park Jeongwoo: Through our Asian tour this year, I learned how to create more complete stages with our members. Meeting TREASURE MAKER from various cities around the world was a meaningful experience, and I received a lot of positive energy from them.
Turning 19 signifies approaching adulthood. Do you have any special dreams or aspirations related to becoming adults or being in your twenties?
Haruto: Rather than having specific dreams, as time passes, I feel a growing sense of responsibility to work even harder.
Park Jeongwoo: Becoming an adult has made me think that I should act more impressively and maturely in my activities. I want to continue making good music and delivering it to our fans.
As the youngest members of TREASURE, how do you perceive your roles within the group?
Haruto: I'm responsible for creating a lively atmosphere within TREASURE. It gives me great atisfaction when I can make our members laugh. I hope we can always come together to enjoy our activities, like we do now. Park Jeongwoo: After spending a long time with the members, we now know each other so well that we're like a family. I'm grateful to the older members who are always taking the lead, as such I'm working hard to be of help to them too.
Your activities in Japan this year were remarkable. Can you share some memorable moments with Japanese fans?
Haruto: Performing on the stage in my hometown, where I dreamed of becoming a singer, is always an overwhelming feeling. While there are many unforgettable moments, the special concert at Kyocera Dome in Japan stands out. It was the final show of our Japanese tour, and the members were deeply moved.
Park Jeongwoo: Through our Asia tour this year, we could meet TREASURE MAKER fans from various cities, not just in Japan. All the moments when we connected with our fans and communicated through music were joyful. The thunderous cheers and support from the stage are still vivid in my memory.
TREASURE has entered a career high season in 2023. Do you have any specific goals or dreams for the future?
Haruto: It doesn't quite feel real that we're at our career high, but I'm genuinely happy and grateful for it. Thanks to the love and support from our fans, I want to repay them by continuously improving and showing a more fantastic side of ourselves.
Park Jeongwoo: I hope we can continue to grow step by step, just like we have done so far. My biggest goal is for all the TREASURE members to stay healthy and happy while working together to deliver great music and performances.
Do you have any personal goals you want to achieve as members of TREASURE in 2023?
Haruto: After enjoying various activities this year with TREASURE MAKERs, I'm looking forward to having more opportunities to create happy memories together. We're working hard to prepare, so please look forward to it!
Park Jeongwoo: My desire to make music that can provide strength and comfort to many people remains unchanged. As all the TREASURE members are putting in effort to deliver great music and performances, I hope we can have more challenges and growth in 2023.
